Powder Bath Makeover: From Dated to Modern

Updated: Sep 19, 2019

Powder baths, sometimes called half baths, are a small space with the potential to be dazzling. This treasure box of a room is often frequented by guests. While it may be the smallest room in the house, it can be the most complicated to redesign because of its tight quarters.

Our Landry Designs team worked with an Arlington, TX couple on this stunning transformation.

DESIGN CHALLENGES:

This small powder bath is directly off the family room. The dated fixtures and decorating style made it an eyesore, and the homeowners were embarrassed to have guests use it. A complete makeover was needed!

There were several challenges with this space:

● Acoustic “popcorn” texture on ceiling

● Worn grasscloth wall covering

● Dated cabinetry and cultured-marble countertop

● Not enough light

DESIGN SOLUTIONS PROVIDED:

The homeowners are drawn to modern design, and love the blue color family, so we decided on a sky blue, turquoise, espresso, lime and white color palette. Smoothing out the ceiling texture allowed us to pop the dark brown onto the “5th wall”. The remaining walls contrast in a soothing sky blue, which became the perfect backdrop for the graphic-print art that includes our accent color of lime green.

We repeated the geometric pattern in the rug, which makes the space more inviting and helps reduce echo, since all of the other furnishings are hard-surface ones, including the new charcoal floor tile, which we grouted in white to complement the new white marble countertop.

For the furniture, we decided on an espresso-stained wood vanity cabinet with lots of storage, and topped it with a rectangular vessel sink in crisp white. And then to add some sparkle, we added a modern brushed nickel faucet, an elongated bar-style vanity light and a side-only framed mirror.

The homeowners are now proud to show off their new powder bath to guests, and also enjoy walking by the pretty view while headed to their family room. A small space, but such a fun project!
