Modern and Kid-Friendly Dining Room
At Landry Designs, we believe that homes should be both beautiful and functional. We were invited to take a look at this newly-purchased home. These homeowners loved the architecture of the house, but not the existing decorating style. They asked for something modern and fun, but still comfortable and durable for their family to use daily, which includes three small children. Read on to learn more about the process.
DESIGN CHALLENGES ADDRESSED:
There were several challenges with this space:
This is the only dining area in the house, so it has to work for casual daily meals and entertaining, which they do frequently.
The existing dining table fits the space well, but the style is very traditional, and the surface is rather delicate for small children.
The existing light fixture is too small for the room.
The ready-made curtains are too short for the tall ceiling.
This room is directly off the entry to the home, so they requested a “wow” first-impression space.
DESIGN SOLUTIONS PROVIDED:
We started the project by replacing their formal dining room table with a large, walnut, trestle table in a much weightier design, which beautifully complements the staircase in the adjacent space. With the high ceilings, the previous table felt too delicate. The surface of this table is maintained by wiping with a damp sponge, which works great with three small kids.
We selected very dramatic host and hostess chairs in charcoal velvet with acacia-wood circular accents, and used faux-leather upholstered chairs on the sides, again for ease of maintenance with the kids.
For the finishing touches, to highlight the zone and add sparkle and light, we replaced the small light fixture with a large, elongated crystal chandelier made up entirely of tubular glass links, which is truly “floating art”.
Tall, ivory, linen draperies and tailor-pleat valances banded in dove gray draw the eye up and make the room feel larger. Colorful art and accessories, along with a wood-framed frosted-glass screen to partition off the room from the entryway, complete the lively, inviting space.
The Big Reveal
The family hosted a large party shortly after the Big Reveal, to rave reviews per the homeowners. And they tell me that the dining room feels so much more in tune with the way they live than the previous design. It works great for daily breakfasts, lunches and dinners, but looks dramatic and grown-up for entertaining. Bon appétit!
